White House says Biden has agreed to meet with Putin ‘in principle’ as long as Russia does not invade Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden has agreed “in principle” with Russian President Vladimir Putin as long as Russia does not further invade Ukraine, the White House said late Sunday.
The meeting would occur after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov meet on February 24 “provided Russia does not proceed with military action,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.
Then move appears to be a last-ditch diplomatic gambit brokered with the aid of French President Emmanuel Macron.
President Biden spoke with President Emmanuel Macron of France on February 20 to discuss the ongoing diplomacy and deterrence efforts in response to Russia’s military buildup on the borders of Ukraine.
