White House will set up a website to distribute 500 million free COVID tests

President Joe Biden has announced the government will provide 500 million free rapid home-testing kits, to redouble vaccination efforts as the threat of Omicron variant is surging through the country.

Biden announced the purchase of a half-billion at-home rapid Covid-19 tests to tackle the wintertime surge of infections. The government will also create new vaccination and testing sites, adding to 20,000 already available and send 1,000 military medical professionals to help hospitals nationwide.

“I know you’re tired, really, and I know you’re frustrated. We all want this to be over, but we’re still in it” Biden said.

The White House will distribute 500 million free at-home rapid COVID-19 tests beginning next month. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the Biden administration is “providing an opportunity … for people to … go on a website and request a test if their preference is to get that test to their home.” The 500 million tests could be increased, depending on developments.

Biden said that the vaccinated Americans can feel comfortable celebrating with their friends and family for the upcoming holidays. “I know some Americans are wondering if you can safely celebrate the holidays with your family and friends. The answer is, yes you can if you and those you celebrate with are vaccinated, particularly if you’ve gotten your booster shot,” Biden said in a White House speech Tuesday.

“Get vaccinated now. It’s free. It’s convenient. I promise you, it saves lives. And I, honest to God, believe it’s your patriotic duty” Biden urged.
