President Biden declared the COVID-19 pandemic “over” in an interview aired on Sunday even though the country continues to grapple with coronavirus infections that kill hundreds of Americans daily.
“The pandemic is over” Biden told CBS’s 60 Minutes. “We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it. But the pandemic is over. If you notice, no one’s wearing masks. Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape, and so I think it’s changing, and I think [the Detroit Auto show resuming after three years] is a perfect example of it.”
The toll of the COVID-19 pandemic has declined significantly from early days when more than 3,000 Americans per day were dying of the disease. But nearly 400 people continue to die from COVID-19 in the U.S. every day, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The World Health Organization (WHO) still designates the virus as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Biden’s interview was filmed before he flew to the U.K. to attend the funeral if Queen Elizabeth II.
