Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv with multiple missile attacks on Sunday, as leaders of the G7 leaders meet in Germany for their annual summit.

The timing of the attack is largely seen as a show-of-force by Russia as the Western leaders gathered for G7 summit and to strengthen support for Ukraine.

At least one person was reported dead and six were wounded when the Russian missile strike that hit a residential apartment block in Kyiv.

Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko said the missiles hit at least two residential buildings, and killed one person and injured six others, including a 7-year-old girl and her mother. The injured were admitted to the hospital as search and rescue operations continue. The attack also damaged a kindergarten in Kyiv.

A Ukrainian parliament member, Oleksiy Goncharenko, wrote on the Telegram app that initial information indicated that Russia launched 14 missiles toward the capital region and Kyiv, suggesting that some were intercepted.

U.S. President Biden on Sunday condemned the Russian missile attack. “It’s more of their barbarism,” Biden said at the official welcome of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Germany.

The United States ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget A. Brink, tweeted that she was “appalled” by the attack. “As the Kremlin continues its indiscriminate attacks on [Ukraine] civilians, [the U.S.] and our partners will pursue every avenue to ensure those responsible for atrocities are held accountable.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address both the G7 and the NATO summit after the European Union showed its support by granting Ukraine candidate status.
