U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met Peruvian Foreign Minister Óscar Maúrtua to discuss bilateral and global agendas.
Deputy Secretary of State Sherman and Peruvian Foreign Minister Maúrtua held a meeting in Lima, Peru, and “discussed opportunities for progress under the Build Back Better World Initiative, how the United States and Peru can work together to address the climate crisis, and our two countries’ shared commitment to human rights and democracy,” the Department of State statement read.
The U.S. deputy secretary also appreciated the Peruvian foreign minister’s efforts and participation in the COVID-19 ministerial meeting hosted by Secretary Blinken and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to “continue working with Peru and other partners across the hemisphere to bring the COVID-19 pandemic to an end,” the statement added.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Maúrtua expressed his willingness to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between both countries, and thanked the U.S. deputy secretary for the “important support received from the U.S. in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic”.
Maúrtua also communicated his interest in increasing bilateral trade, attracting quality investments, and meeting the great infrastructure needs under the “Build back better world” agenda.
The U.S. and Peruvian officials also exchanged diplomatic notes to officially implement the Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Agreement between the two countries. The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation in between the U.S. and Peru in search and rescue operations and enhance efficiency in helping the people who need urgent support.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Peru, Deputy Secretary of State Sherman also held a virtual meeting with Peruvian President Pedro Castillo. “Deputy Secretary Sherman and President Castillo discussed issues important to the U.S.-Peru bilateral relationship, including growing bilateral opportunities for trade and investment, advancing human rights, promoting inclusive economic growth, and combating the climate crisis,” the statement read.
