Pelosi and Congressional delegation visit Kyiv, Ukraine
U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi made an unannounced visit to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend. She is the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded in February.
“Our delegation traveled to Kyiv to send an unmistakable and resounding message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine. Our meeting with President Zelenskyy began with him thanking the United States for the substantial assistance that we have provided”, the official statement said.
Zelensky conveyed the need for continued security, economic and humanitarian assistance from the United States to address the devastating human toll taken on the Ukrainian people by Putin’s diabolic invasion, it added. The delegation “proudly delivered the message that additional American support is on the way,” Pelosi said.
The first official Congressional delegation to have visited Ukraine following Russia’s invasion included Chairman Jim McGovern, Chairman Gregory Meeks, Chairman Adam Schiff, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Congressman Bill Keating and Congressman Jason Crow, will continue travel in southeast Poland and Warsaw.
The trip to Kyiv was not disclosed until the delegation was safely out of Ukraine.
The trip came two days after U.S. President Joe Biden asked Congress for $33 billion to bolster Ukraine’s fight against Russia,
“The United States is the leader in strong support for Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. Thank you for helping to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state,” Zelenskyy said on Twitter, sharing a video of the meeting with Pelosi.
