United States will commit more than $1 billion in humanitarian assistance for Ukrainians
The United States plans to accept up to 100,000 Ukrainians refugees fleeing Russia’s war on Ukraine. and has pledged more than $1 billion in new humanitarian aid, President Biden announced during his visit to Europe.
“Many Ukrainian refugees will wish to stay in Europe, closer to their homes, but we’ll also welcome 100,000 Ukrainians to the United States with a focus on reuniting families,” Biden said.
The war in Ukraine has displaced millions of people in weeks. More than 3.5 million people have fled since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, putting pressure on the neighboring European countries receiving them.
“This is not something that Poland or Romania or Germany should carry on their own,” Biden said during a news briefing in Brussels. “This is an international responsibility.”
President Biden also announced that the United States will commit more than $1 billion in humanitarian assistance to help get relief to millions of Ukrainians affected by the war in Ukraine. U.S. has committed to provide over $2 billion in military equipment to Ukraine including anti-air systems, anti-armor systems, ammunition, since Biden took office in January 2021.
Biden administration has also announced to invest $320 million to bolster democratic resilience and defend human rights in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
