World leaders congratulate Biden on becoming 46th US President
UK: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who also found an ally in Trump, tweeted that “America’s leadership is vital on the issues that matter to us all, from climate change to COVID, and I look forward to working with President Biden.”
Canada: “Canada and the United States enjoy one of the most unique relationships in the world, built on a shared commitment to democratic values, common interests, and strong economic and security ties. Our two countries are more than neighbours – we are close friends, partners, and allies,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “We will continue this partnership as we fight the global COVID-19 pandemic and support a sustainable economic recovery… I look forward to working with President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, their administration, and the United States Congress as we strive to make our countries safer, more prosperous, and more resilient,” Trudeau added.
Germany: Germany’s president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, called Inauguration Day a “good day for democracy.”
France: French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to return to the Paris Agreement climate accord in a congratulatory message.
Israel: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Joe Biden and said that he looked forward “to further strengthen the US-Israel alliance” while urging him to build on the series of peace deals brokered between the Jewish state and its Arab neighbors.
NATO: NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the “bond between North America and Europe is the bedrock of our security, and a strong NATO is good for both North America and Europe.”
EU: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that “Europe stands ready… to reconnect with an old and trusted partner”.
Japan: Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga congratulated President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and said that “Japan and the United States are allies tied firmly by bonds and shared universal values.”
Pakistan: Pakistan’s Prime Minster Imran Khan congratulated President Joe Biden and said that he looked forward to “building a stronger Pak-US partnership through trade & economic engagement, countering climate change, improving public health, combating corruption & promoting peace in region & beyond.”
India: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a series of tweets, said that the US and India “stand united and resilient in addressing common challenges and advancing global peace and security”.
